Criterion

Balic‘s infamous gladiatorial arena attracts thousands of Balicans every day. On the surface, the games sate the crowd’s decadent thirst for violence and gore. Underneath, however, it is a political minefield: a noble’s or a merchant lord’s gladiator champion is his proxy. A win at the arena can invite glory and wealth, not only for the gladiator, but also for his sponsor (or owner). A spectacular loss, on the other hand, can lose both fighter and sponsor a great deal of face, and even their lives. Furthermore, gambling is par for the course, and match-fixing – in the bloodiest of ways – is common.
